The Project: March Studio was engaged to design the ground floor of the hotel, which required a striking entrance which still was still required to be a fully functioning airlock with automatic doors. This was not so easy when the design involved sandwiching thousands of marbles between two perforated steel plates.
Materials: Amber Marbles, Heat Treated Steel, Rubber.
Construction: The marbles are captured between two folded steel plates with a heavy waterjet cut rubber gasket to prevent the passage of air through the panels. The steel was heated to a temperature of over 400°C then drenched in oil to achieve a blue/black patina.
Design: All 32 panels are different but, when assembled as a whole, form a design which resonates with that of the timber ceiling.
